Meditation and Stress

Why is Transcendental Meditation so good at reducing stress?  We could say that the 20 minutes we spend meditating is 20 minutes ‘off’, a great way of taking a break from the daily routine.  But there’s more.

It’s what happens to the body during TM which really enables us to manage stress so effectively.  One of unique aspects of TM is the level of rest which the body experiences during meditation. The heart beats more slowly, blood pressure decreases, muscles relax and breathing slows down, all spontaneously.  The body experiences a level of deep rest.

Rest is nature’s way of allowing the body to dissolve stress.  This is why we sleep on average 8 hours a night.  It’s a natural reboot so that we wake up the next day feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day.  That’s the idea in principle, however, as the pace of life increases at an alarming rate and the amount of work and responsibilities we take on also increases, we often find that rest becomes elusive.

This is where TM is so useful.  When you learn TM with The Meditation People you learn a technique which anyone can practice that allows the mind and body to settle into a state of rest naturally and without effort.  The process doesn’t involve trying to rest or settle down.  It’s a mental technique which is simple to do and the settling down part happens spontaneously when we do it.

The result is that the body is able to dissolve much more stress than would be possible without meditation because we’re receiving so much more extra rest by meditating twice a day.

Our friendly and experienced teachers at The Meditation People create Zoom courses around our students’ diaries and teach TM online regularly to people all over the world.
