Why Effort Doesn’t Work

One of the most charming things about learning Transcendental Meditation is to experience that the technique really is effortless.

If we were to summarise the process of TM with as few words as possible we could say: TM allows the active mind to become silent.

Inner silence can’t be achieved using effort because the very act of trying causes mental activity to increase.  We can compare this with ‘trying’ to go to sleep. Anyone who’s ever tried to go to sleep will know that it doesn’t work.  We can’t actively use the mind and expect to fall asleep at the same time.

We want mental activity to decrease during meditation. This happens when we don’t try, when we begin the TM technique and then allow the mind to do what it naturally wants to do.  Because the mind enjoys the process of becoming quieter at the same time as remaining completely alert, when we give it chance to do this, awareness is drawn inwards naturally and the experience is effortless.  We just need to know how to start the process and for this we learn a simple technique like TM.
