The Importance of Rest
As a culture we’re very good at being busy. Advances in technology and connectivity have brought great benefits to our working lives but work follows many of us around on our portable devices and the boundaries of the traditional 8-hour working day have gone. This is great for productivity but, for the body, it’s important that we balance activity and work with rest. The more active we are, the more effective our rest needs to be to keep our life in balance.
Transcendental Meditation is a simple, effective way to give the body deep rest. One of the most remarkable things about TM is the amount of rest the body gets during meditation. Breathing slows down, muscles relax and the metabolic rate slows considerably, which, of course, can be measured. Interestingly, this rest doesn’t come about by trying to relax the body, it’s a spontaneous reaction to the natural TM technique.
In TM, you’re taught a simple mental procedure, which you practice without effort and physical deep rest and the benefits it has on health follow automatically. All you need is a little time for meditation and somewhere to sit. As TM is a silent technique, which doesn’t involve sitting in a special posture, this could just as easily be a seat on a train as it could your sofa at home.
To learn TM, you need four sessions which are usually scheduled from Saturday to Monday. You can then practice it yourself. We have an extensive drop-in follow-up programme, which you can use to check on your progress and keep your meditation working effectively.
The Meditation People teach high quality Transcendental Meditation courses online. We also partner with The Meditation Trust, teaching face-to-face courses in Hove three times a year in January, May and September.
