David Lynch and TM
We are celebrating the life of artist and film-maker David Lynch who has passed away. David Lynch was a highly experienced, enthusiastic and knowledgeable practitioner of Transcendental Meditation. He would often mention TM when being interviewed about his work and his creative process. He also wrote an inspirational book about TM and creativity called ‘Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness and Creativity.’
In an interview with David Stratton in Brisbane Australia in March 2015, on the occasion of his ’Between Two Worlds’ exhibition, David gave this accurate and inspiring description of TM:
“Each and every one of us human beings has a field within us, a treasury within us and this treasury is known by many names but it’s like an ocean of pure consciousness, pure bliss, unbounded, infinite, eternal, immutable, immortal consciousness. It’s always and forever been there, it’s there right now and it will be there forever and this pure consciousness has qualities. So within each and every one of us is unbounded intelligence, unbounded creativity, bliss, happiness, love, energy and peace …. So I practice Transcendental Meditation as taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. It’s a mental technique, an ancient form of meditation that Maharishi brought back for this time. It’s easy and effortless. It’s not a concentration form of meditation, it’s not a contemplation form of meditation … once any human being experiences it they truly begin to expand whatever consciousness they had to begin with. And a side effect of expanding consciousness is that negativity recedes. So things like stress, traumatic stress, anxiety, tension, sorrow, depression, hate, anger, fear start to lift away from the human being. Such freedom this brings so I say it’s like gold coming in and garbage going out and it brings so much happiness, so much for flow of ideas, seeing life as a better and better thing. It feeds the work and feeds the life.”
Thank-you, David Lynch.
