TM is Easy

This recent article in Marie Claire recently highlighted two important things about Transcendental Meditation*. The first is that it’s easier than other types of meditation.  One of the reasons for this is that we don’t try to clear the mind or fight random thoughts during TM.  If you’ve ever tried to do this you’ll know that the mind invariably wins and you end up feeing that you haven’t succeeded in meditating.

We don’t need to control or fight the mind in TM because it’s a technique that allows the mind to settle down naturally, without effort.  You learn the technique and follow some simple instructions.  It’s even easier than the article suggests in that you don’t have to try to ‘repeat a word or mantra over and over.’  When you learn TM with the Meditation People, you’re taken through the process step by step several times and one of the first things you notice is that the process goes almost by itself.  Introducing effort wouldn’t add anything to the experience.  It would be a bit like trying to help the process of falling asleep along by making an effort to fall asleep.  There’s just no need!

The other point the article highlights is the research conducted on TM.  The main thing that happens to the body during Transcendental Meditation is that it gets deep rest.  This can be measured and it’s also palpable; you can often feel the body settling into deep rest during TM.  It really helps to know that you’re learning something which studies have shown is beneficial to health and to the body. The only thing practitioners sacrifice for TM is a bit of time as we aim to meditate for 20 minutes twice a day. For what we gain in benefits, each meditation is definitely 20 minutes well spent!
