Happiness and Transcendental Meditation

How can we relate meditation to happiness?

The human mind is attracted to experiences which make it happy.  When we dream about our future, where we might be living, what we might be doing and who with, we think about scenarios which make us happy.  The things we dream about are the things which make us happy.

If we’re working and at the same time we become aware of music or a conversation that the mind finds interesting, our attention switches from the task at hand to the music or conversation automatically because the mind is drawn to experiences that make it happy.

This is the very tendency that we utilise in Transcendental Meditation.  TM allows the mind to experience finer, quieter levels of thought; it enables the mind and body to settle into a state of deep rest, which gives a sense of calm and relaxation.  Because the mind enjoys this experience, our attention is drawn to it spontaneously.  All we need  to do is learn how to start the experience and the rest goes almost by itself.

This is why we can say that TM is natural and effortless.  It works with the mind not against it.  This means it’s easy to get into a routine of meditating twice a day, which brings so many benefits.  Transcendental Meditation is something we look forward to doing each day.

You can learn TM with The Meditation People either online or in person on our course in Hove.
